Congratulations to BREATHE Steering Committee member Erica Dale, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology & Functional Genomics! Dr. Dale was awarded a $2M 5-year R01 grant from the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (NHLBI) to study functional recovery of breathing ability after cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). She will investigate the potential of a novel treatment to trigger spinal neuroplasticity and restore independent breathing ability for those who have suffered from severe injuries in the neck: epidural electrical stimulation of the spinal cord. This support for Dr. Dale’s research will establish her laboratory as an innovator in developing new treatments to help those living with SCI. A passionate advocate for the SCI community, Dr. Dale notes, “I believe strongly that this grant belongs to the people living with spinal cord injury. Our work is for them.”
