Dr. Leo Ferreira Awarded New R21 to Study if Systemic Antioxidant Treatment Improves Cardiorespiratory Function and Exercise Tolerance in Older Women

Leonardo Ferreira

BREATHE Steering Committee member, Dr. Leo Ferreira, was recently awarded a 2-year, $457k R21 grant from the National Institute on Aging to study “Systemic antioxidant treatment for cardiomyopathy, muscle weakness, and exercise intolerance in postmenopausal HFpEF.” This project will test whether an over-the-counter dietary supplement with antioxidant properties improves cardiorespiratory function and exercise tolerance in a model of heart failure that is especially relevant for older women. If Dr. Ferreira’s results confirm the efficacy and safety of this supplement, he will test its potential in clinical trials. Congrats, Dr. Ferreira!
