BREATHE members and trainees were in full force at the American Physiological Society Summit in Minneapolis, MN. Beyond presenting 24 posters, 8 oral presentations, and organizing multiple game-changer sessions, BREATHE helped sponsor the Control of Breathing Mixer: Hot Topics in Respiratory Control.. Clearly, we had an outsized presence at this annual gathering of physiologists from across the world! Five of our members also garnered awards for their work:
Dr. Michele Moraes received the 2026 CANTROL International Postdoctoral Research Award at the American Physiology Summit. This distinguished award recognizes exceptional postdoctoral research contributions, honoring an individual whose work advances the field on an international scale.
Dr. Erica Dale was honored with the 2026 Beverly Petterson Bishop Award for Excellence in Neuroscience. This prestigious distinction is given annually to a researcher whose outstanding work demonstrates innovation and excellence in the field of neuroscience or neurophysiology research.
Sultan Khanfar received the 2026 Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Undergraduate Researcher Award, recognizing remarkable contributions from an undergraduate student who has demonstrated excellence and promise in studies on neural control and autonomic regulation and supporting their participation at the American Physiology Summit
Dr. Maria Nikodemova was recognized with the 2026 Abstract of Distinction for her exemplary scientific abstract, Spinal Microglia are Dysregulated in a Rat Model of Pompe Disease.
Dr. Aaron Jones was awarded the 2026 Respiration Section Trainee Poster Presentation Award for his outstanding presentation on Circadian Clock Protein Bmal1 Within Respiratory Motor Neurons Regulates Rest Phase Acute Intermittent Hypoxia – Induced Phrenic and Ventilatory Long – Term Facilitation in Rats.
Additionally, BREATHE Associate Director, Dr. David Fuller, was elected as Chair of the APS Respiration Section for the next three years!
