Postdoctoral researcher Cara Donohue, Ph.D., has received a two-year $137,604 grant from the American Heart Association to test an intervention designed to strengthen breathing muscles and improve post-surgical outcomes in patients who have had heart surgery.

A new rat-model study by Erica Dale, PhD and Ian Malone, BS found that applying a form of electrical stimulation below a spinal-cord injury and in sync with natural breathing rhythm elicited respiratory neuroplasticity, or ability of neurons and neural networks to change and adapt.

Dr. Hasser visited the University of Florida to present her talk, “Forebrain – hindbrain connections and the response to hypoxia?”, in the Department of Physiological Sciences Seminar Series.
