Research focus: My research focuses on neuroplasticity and autonomic regulation of cardiovascular and respiratory function. I previously investigated acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH)-induced plasticity within the nucleus tractus solitarii, identifying NMDAR- and CaMKII-dependent mechanisms underlying respiratory and autonomic adaptations. I then extended this work to examine autonomic dysfunction following spinal cord injury (SCI), with a focus on baroreflex impairment and cardiovascular instability.
As part of the T32 program, I will investigate how AIH-induced plasticity can be harnessed to improve autonomic and respiratory function after SCI, and how diurnal factors influence these plastic responses, with the goal of optimizing therapeutic strategies.
What drives me: Understanding how neuronal circuits adapt at the synaptic, structural, and functional levels in response to physiological and pathological challenges, and how these plastic changes can be harnessed to restore function are my key motivations. My goal is to translate these insights into therapeutic strategies for neurological disorders such as spinal cord injury, ALS, and other conditions characterized by impaired autonomic and motor function.
What I like most about the BREATHE Training Program: The BREATHE Training Program represents the opportunity to be part of a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment that connects fundamental neuroscience with real-world clinical impact. The program’s focus on respiratory and autonomic function, along with its translational approach, strongly aligns with my goal of developing therapies that improve outcomes after spinal cord injury.
Awards/achievements since being on the T32: I am newly appointed to the T32, and with the support of my mentor and collaborators at the BREATHE Center, I am applying for a fellowship.

Why I chose BREATHE at the University of Florida: The focus on neuroplasticity, respiratory physiology, and translation, as well as the opportunity to train in Dr. Mitchell’s lab, which closely aligns with my research goals in spinal cord injury and functional recovery.

What I do for fun: In my free time, I enjoy staying active through walking, biking, and I’m taking up swimming too. I value spending time with my husband, friends, and family and enjoy hosting and cooking. Traveling and experiencing new places and perspectives are especially meaningful to me, as I enjoy continuously learning and engaging with new environments.
